Shin splints are a general term applied to a variety of conditions that involve the lower leg. Generally, it involves either the muscles on the front part of the shin or the outer lining of the tibia (shin bone).
It is characterized by pain and irritation in the shin region of the leg and is often associated with overuse or an imbalance in the strength and flexibility of the lower leg.
Rehab SECRETS for this condition are:
- Fill Dixie cups with water and put them in your freezer to make ice cups. Use the ice cups for ice massage over the painful area for 5-10 minutes.
- Decrease painful activity for 2-3 weeks.
- Deep tissue massage to the area that is most sore.
- Stretch in a pain-free range. Stretching should not increase pain.
- Strengthening should include the muscles in the front portion of the lower leg.
